This is a padded cushion rather than a thin draped sheet. The face is pure cotton, the inside is filled with cotton, and hand stitching runs through both to hold the layers together. That construction is why it lies flat on a seat cushion instead of rippling, and why it has enough substance to take the impact of a dog jumping up rather than transmitting it straight through to the upholstery.
Cotton fill also gives claws something to sink into that is not your sofa. A cat that kneads before settling works the pad, not the cushion underneath, and the stitching keeps the filling from migrating into one lumpy corner the first time it goes through a wash cycle. Hand stitched quilting is slower to make than a bonded pad, but it is the reason this survives regular laundering instead of coming out of the machine as a bag of loose wadding.
