Herringbone is a broken twill, which means the weave direction reverses every few threads instead of running in one continuous diagonal. That short repeat is the reason it wears the way it does: there is no long float of yarn lying across the surface for a claw to catch and drag, so damage that would open a run in a plain weave tends to stop at the next reversal. The pattern is structural, part of how the cloth is built rather than something applied to it.
The chenille yarn adds the other half. Short fibres wound around a twisted core give a dense, slightly plush face that keeps grit and shed fur sitting on top rather than working down into the fabric, and the cover is finished to be water resistant, antifouling and antibacterial, so the drips and damp paws that come with animals can be blotted before they reach the sofa. Between the weave and the finish, this is aimed squarely at a couch that gets slept on by something with claws.
Sizes start at a 27.6 inch square, which suits an armchair seat, and run to 35.4 by 82.7 inches for a long three-seater, with a matching 17.7 inch cushion cover so the throw pillows are handled in the same cloth. Measure the seat cushion run and its depth, then take the closest size. It lays straight over the seat with nothing to fasten and washes in a normal machine cycle.
